Adding an ammo crate would require the model to be altered and the entire slik to be redone. It'd be possible to write slogans on the Basilisk's gun and gun shield, or any other area of the bodywork, but the hard part is normally making it so that it works well in all colour schemes.

Yes, you would, but it's still difficult to work on all colour schemes. Take black text, for example. How do you make it work on dark colour schemes? Or the edges of the scrolls. They'll be curly, so you can't make them perfectly straight and blocky without looking bad. That normally leaves you with some limitations as to which schemes it looks good on.

For an example, take the bloddy Chaos Space Marine texture. Try it on a light colour scheme and then compare it with a dark colour scheme. It could be done better with less grey showing through, but that's the kind of problem that extra details like that can face if you're not careful.
