Badges and Banners

Postby DalerMendhi at 09 Jul 2008, 20:45

Actually these were my first badge and banner ever done, i kinda recently learned to make them (Thanks for the guide (great guide)). So it would be great with some feedback and opinions.

Looks good for a first attempt - a reasonable amount of shading and well put together.

To make it better the only things I can think of are to darken the gold colour (at the moment it just looks a strange shade of yellow - something more antiqued would be better) and add a bit more definition to the edge of the star behind the Inquisition "I" (at the moment it just blends in a bit).

If you want to see my badges and banners, just check the site :)

I'll move this in to the DoW category, since it covers badges and banners as well.

Nice, I'd use those for an army or two.

Just got a program called Gimp yesterday, only read one tutorial so far but I like the way these turned out. Used the only two F.E.A.R. related images i could find on the entire internet for these two.

Figured out something called Color to Alpha last night for this Marine Corp emblem. And the second one is the Army star badge and banner. I tried Alpha(ing) out the black in the Army badge but there were too many shades and really tore up the image. Might be another way to do it... I'll figure it out soon enough.

PS. If anyone reading this has any pics of Replica insignias from F.E.A.R. I would love to get my hands on them.

The first two look interesting and almost Nurgle-esque. How many effects did you add and how much is just directly converted images?

The Gimp is definitely a very useful tool. There's only a couple of things that I've found that it can't do that Photoshop can and I hardly ever use those features or there are alternate methods to get the same effect. There are also some features in Gimp (like the resizing grab handles on selections) that are just hugely useful at times.

Hopefully you'll have fun exploring what you can do with the Gimp and we'll see some custom graphics :)

Hehe, ever played "F.E.A.R."? Pretty much all image conversion. First used Color to Alpha on the Marine emblem so the white of its background didnt stick out againt the white of the shoulder armor. Reminds me, I gotta go back and fix those first two now that I know how :D

I scaled all the images ive been working with in MS paint to 60x60 and 60x90 using a lot of copy/paste and Resize/Skew which is a pain in the ass.

Thanks IBBoard. I'll keep cracking at Gimp, see what I can churn out.

EDIT:Dare to compare.

No, I'm not much of a gamer (not got the time). I've heard of F.E.A.R. but never really read much about it.

MS Paint? How did you ever get reasonable results out of MS Paint? :D I think the only times I've ever used it in the past five years have been at work when I've needed to save a screenshot in Windows!
