Grots from Goblins

Postby IBBoard at 11 Aug 2005, 12:53

I'm getting back into 40K now (living half a mile at the most from the store is a big help! as is being on holiday before my last year at Uni) and I've finally got round to converting the Goblin box set that I bought in Ottakers in Bracknell into the Grots for my Ork army. Some of them have kept bows, one has a crossbow in his hand (for the sheer sake of being different) and then the rest have a combination of 40K 2nd and Gorkamorka guns and bolters :) I've taken pics of them now, but I've got to crop them, reduce them down and compress the images more (4 megapixel cameras are good for photos but bad for websites :D) so I'll post back later when I have pics :)

Now all I need to do is undercoat them (an adventure into the back alley behind the flat with a can of paint and some models!), paint them (a possible journey into Manchester city center when I find out the paints are dried) and then get into GW Manchester on a tuesday evening to learn to game again :)

The grots are now undercoated! :D I took the pictures pre-undercoat so you can see some definition (a big mob one and then four or five single model shots) but I've still got to crop and resize them etc, I've been busy with Dark Angels banners for Dawn of War:

I wanna see photos :(

BTW, out of the three standard 3rd (?) company banners, I think the sword on the middle one looks best

EDIT: I've got some of my netters painted up now, thats nearly a finished regiment

Yeah, it's third company, and I think the crinkled one probably is best, but the 2nd and 5th company are actually wrong because Dark Angels don't use the normal codex colours - doh!
Hopefully we'll have pic on monday :)

OK, pics are here! click on the thumbnails :)

The full Grot mob (800px wide)

Grot with Boom Stikk (my original idea for most of the Grots to make the bows and arrows into "blastas")

Grot using one of the guns from the GorkaMorka plastic orks (quite a good fit on the wrist/hand size)

Grot with twin pistols (from the weapons sprue that came with 1st/2nd edition metal orks)

Grot pointing (done because I had a little bit of Greenstuff and two Grots who looked too similar)

Grot with metal Ork slugga (from a GorkaMorka grab bag I picked up). He actually looks quite mean!

Hah, they look great :D

I just finished my netters last night, found out I still actually need to paint two more archers. Spearmen next, then squig herders I think

I'm painting the Grots up now - should hopefully have some "base colour" and "finished" pics of them at some point :) And then once I've done all 20 Grots (5 at a time, because I always find that paint brushes clog up if I do too many more) then I'll go back to my original Shoota Boyz and repaint those because they definately need it :D

OK, I've done the first batch and I started on the second batch yesterday (I don't paint much, too much work fighting my Skins As Races mods for DoW at the moment!) and I've got mid-point and completed photos of them, once again I've just got to get round to cropping them. Once they're all done, I'll hopefully start going to GW again and gaming :) And I'll add an article on my site about how I did them (if anyone else has any conversions or paint jobs they've done and want showing off, just write an article and send it to me :) )

Lookin' good.

All these posts on modelling is making me think of starting to get back into the model side of GW again.

Now if I could only remember which end of the brush you put the paint on........ :?

OK, I've actually got another five painted now and the final ten with their skin basecoated, but here are the "mid stage" and completed pics of my first batch of Grots From Goblins :)

Mid-painting stage (just to show basic colours - I actually normally do some highlights of the skin before I paint the clothes)

Finished models

Now to get the rest of them painted and based and get to Games Workshop Manchester for some gaming :) although I think I need a few more than 20 once I get a bit more money :D

OK, as requested, here are is the full mob. Lighting isn't completely perfect (should have done it earlier with the light coming in the window) but it shows you the mob of 20 plus slaver and squig hound with handler :)

Warning, the image is 100px wide!

Cool pic. I love the squig hound.

How did you get the pic that shape, is it a function all digital cameras have. :?: That may sound like a dumb question but i know more about the dark side of the moon than i do about cameras. :D

I could have done a panoramic shot to get it like that, but no, just cropped it :D Didn't think people would be wanting to download a massive 4MP picture that was mainly my painting station!

As for the Squig Hound, I like him too. He was just an interesting idea I came up with. I was thinking of using the actual Squig Hound from the Orc expansion pack for Warhammer Quest, but the newer squigs looked like they were pulling on their leash, so I used him :) Minor conversion to the Gorka Morka Head Honcho to reposition his arm, bit of green stuff amateurishly moulded on for a leash (with wires in the extending straps), and the job's a good 'un.

[edit] OK, part one (Converting Grots from Goblins - the actual converting part) is now online :) I'll write the painting side later.
