HBO exec has answer on fixing DRM

Postby IBBoard at 10 May 2007, 19:43

I've just been giving Slashdot a skim and found a great article about a speech from the "chief technical officer" about what DRM (Digital Rights Management - the annoying crap that iTunes puts in to make sure that you can't legitimately listen to MP3s on anything but Apple products...sorry, that's put in to make sure that you don't copy the file to people you shouldn't  )

Any gueses as to what the solution is? Make it more compatible? Make it work better with a wider amount of hardware rather than restricting the normal operation of legitimate customers while posing no barrier to criminals/pirates?

No, his answer is to rename it to DCE (Digital Customer Enablement) :D (Slashdot article)

I'm quite surprised really. If he is the chief technical officer then you'd assume he had some technical background and would know that DRM itself is broken and that's why people don't like it (see all of the people having to return Casino Royal when it wouldn't play, sometimes multiple returns, only for it to work if you used easily available software to rip it and re-burn it yourself within about half an hour) Obviously getting to the "executive" level means that experience is lost.

I like one of the suggestions in the comments:
Consumer Rights Access Program
