Washington court 'correctly' interprets US 2nd Amendment

Postby IBBoard at 09 Dec 2006, 20:20

Having done a bit of American history (granted it wasn't much, but then again there isn't much compared to our history :D) and read up about the US Constitution and Amendments, I always wondered how people managed to misinterpret it to allow anyone to carry guns.

Now, it seems, a Washington DC Court is saying guns are for militias only.

The Wikipedia quote says:

A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

Which has always, to me, said that you can bear arms in the UK as long as you're forming a militia. I've never been able to work out how it reads as "anyone may carry a gun" unless you're dealing in Pratchett-esque "Militia Futures" - militias in potential - where you could form a militia, therefore you'll carry a gun.

If only this would spread further across America then the whole country (and possibly the world) might be a safer place :)
