Slang and Abbreviations

Postby IBBoard at 25 May 2005, 12:06

Since this is the Newbie Outpost, I might as well finally put something helpful in, rather than just introductions :D This is just something I thought of now while using an abbreviation in a post:

  • GW - Games Workshop
  • WH40K, W40K or 40K - Warhammer 40,000
  • WHFB - Warhammer Fantasy Battle
  • BFG - Battle Fleet Gothic
  • LotR - Lord of the Rings
  • TT - Table Top
  • BB - Bulletin Board (unlikely) or Blood Bowl
  • WHQ - Warhammer Quest (dungeon exploration)
  • DoW - Dawn of War (the GW Computer game)
  • WA - Winter Assault (the DoW expansion pack)
  • DC - Dark Crusade (the DoW expansion pack)
  • WD - White Dwarf magazine
  • SM - Space Marine
  • CSM - Chaos Space Marine
  • DE - Dark Eldar (possibly Dark Elf as well, but not that I've seen)
  • BA - Blood Angels (the SM Chapter)
  • DA - Dark Angels (again, the SM Chapter)
  • SW - Space Wolves (again the SM Chapter) or Star Wars
  • WFRP - Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay
  • IG - Imperial Guard
  • Ult - Ultramarines
  • WH - Witch hunters
  • DH - Daemon Hunters
  • BT - Black Templars
  • FC - Force Commander
  • HB - Heavy Bolter
  • GK - Grey Knights

Any other suggestions on useful abbreviations to list, just tell me :)

If you've got BA, you might want DA - Dark Angels

Some more common ones WH40k - Warhammer 40,000, WHFB - Warhammer Fantasy Battle, BFG - Battle Fleet Gothic. Also: 5-HT - 5-hydroxytryptamine (seratonin), EPSP - excitatory post synaptic potential, cAMP - cyclic adenosine monophosphate. Or not.

I'm in my first year of psychology at the moment, I took a biomedical module on Neuroscience and its a little more complex, gives you lots of intelligent sounding terms, although my medical student friends usually beat me with more complex ones  :)

I've just found AMPA-R, which is a amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazole proprionic acid glutamate receptor. Although thats cheating really cos I don't know what it is or what it does. I can see why they abbriviated it though :D.

If you really want to use those terms at least use them with abbriviations! With my english [which are pretty bad] I can't figure out what these thingies are,nor what they do.Basically I'm not sure if I can pronounce them correctly!

*is tempted to split it into a separate topic*
Don't worry, don't think most people will understand those long words! or be able to pronounce them properly. Very specialised and scientific ;)
