Morning all

Postby Squig at 15 Dec 2009, 14:10

Quick hello to all the fellow painters and gamers out there...

I've been an avid collector and gamer for quite some time, since the late 80's really, truth be told, and having worked for GW for a period I became disillusioned by the hobby seeing it as a very "clicky" place to work, and always feeling very out of place (I have other hobbies, loving automotive mechanics and tuning cars, this being far more expensive, as well as socialising with friends over a ps2/xbox at the time, now it's a ps3 or the 360  ) so GW slipped out of my life and I moved on relegating all the models and games to the attic.

However, now my girlfriend of 7 years expressed an interest in Dawn of War and has been after me painting one of the LotR Nazgul models for a couple of years after seeing one on the 'net somewhere.
So the collection has been pulled back out of hibernation and currently the 1300pts of dwarven troops are being painted by Emma and I with a view to completing them, then my marines and building Lizardman and Eldar armies for her.

We are aiming at the moment for two 1500pts Warhammer armies and two 500pts 40k armies to start us back into the hobby and provide something we can either build on or simply game with to give us something else to enjoy as a couple.

Anyway hi everyone.

Welcome to the forums. Sounds like you've got a bit more history in gaming than me :)

The GF is encouraging you to paint things and getting involved? My wife thinks some of the painted models are pretty enough, but doesn't want to get involved and thinks the gaming is a bit silly (plus, as an amateur author, she thinks GW blatantly steal too much of their background, like the way the Old World is almost identical to Earth).

Good luck with the army collection and getting back in to painting. If you've not seen it already then check out our Games Workshop on a Budget article to get the most out of your purchase when you start up the Lizardmen and Eldar :)

Not just encouraging... she's joining in and enjoying it, and she's not a bad painter, either

I haven't tried any of the lotr game they have, I used to play the lord of the rings miniature game by Sabertooth, which was great fun.

I also must ask which craftworld you will be choosing for eldar, I would recommend biel-tan, and not recommend failthwe.

Also, you said an interest in dawn of war, is it Dawn of War (one of the expansions), or Dawn of War 2?

Dawn of War is actually the vanilla game, the expansions are named differently, and you usually say Dawn of War 2 if you mean it, Dawn of War can mean the entire franchise too.

My wife is good with stories and words, but I don't think she has the patience to paint miniatures :)

As for Craftworlds, I'm guessing Ulthwe are like Ultramarines - the 'default' one that everyone picks. In terms of visual style then my choice would be between Biel-Tan and Ulthwe, and from the little I know it'd be the same for army selection as well (I like the Ultwe focus on troops :) )

Ulthwe is mostly infantry, where biel-tan is pure assault, and not only fast attack either. The biel-tan unique titan sized grav tank is very deadly.

Due to the popularity of Dawn of War and the books, I am seeing a lot more Blood Ravens than Ultramarines now. The unique Gabriel Angelos piece from preordering Dawn of War 2 is also really powerful and can only be used as a Blood Raven, since he comes prepainted.

Dawn of War: Dark Crusade with Firestorm over Kronos Mod... after playing this mod the vanilla game seems decidedly bland.

Re. Eldar and craftworlds, and, for that matter, Space Marines and chapters, and picking specific established paint schemes is not my idea of creative painting... plus Emma likes a take on red and yellow, and I'm all for dark grey and bone colours.
With that I mind I'll also enjoy writing a new chapter inc. history and structure, influenced by games and campaigns I play.

It's nice and easy to create new chapters for Space Marines since there are so many of them out there that haven't been detailed. I always thought Eldar were a bit more constrained since they were a dying race, but GW seem to have opened it up a bit more recently with a few new craftworlds.

As a warhammer fanboi I just stick with the preset ones.
