Dark Future returns?

Postby MadMaffMan at 09 Jan 2006, 21:56

I see in WD 313 there is an article on Games Day 2K5, in it there is a mention that they played Dark Future in the Archive area.

Does this mean that DF is going to make a reapperance as a specialist game. :?:

If so, will they re-release the books and maybe even write some new ones. There must be plenty of stories they could do, just watch Mad Max a few times for ideas.

The Dark Future novels are already back (some of them at least) under the publisher of Black Flame (a sub-section of Black Library for non-GW stuff)

As for it returning, I wondered that as well, but then it is in the 'Archive' area, so maybe they were just doing a little retro-show-off.

*sighs* wouldn't it be great to have the time and money to do all of these great side-line games. I've always wanted a Gorkamorka gang, a Necromunda gang (probably those flamey cultist guys :D), a Bloodbowl team and all the rest of it!

The Neromunda gang with the flamers were the Redemptionist's weren't they :?:

Did you read the Redeemer comic strip in Warhammer Monthly, now that guy WAS nuts. 'If it doesn't hurt, it doesn't count!'

I did have a small Bloodbowl team but gave it up after failing to win a single game against my sister.....oh the shame.

Ah, yeah, Redemptionists, that's them :) TGSC bought a couple when he had his "Sword of Sanguinius" army. They were Blood Angels successors, only without the Black Rage (they'd cleared that) but with minor frothing loons attached :D

I've read a bit of Redeemer, but never bought WHM. I did have a couple of free ones from various places, though :)

As for Bloodbowl - bad luck :D I got beat in the in-store intro game by TGSC, but only because I didn't risk it and go for extra moves when his guy broke lose because I didn't know we were only playing the one touchdown!

Back to Dark Future, I'm wondering how long ago it is that they last showed anything in White Dwarf in the way of painted models. I'm sure it must be at least 10 years, if not 15. *thinks* Hang on, I've been gaming for over 10 years now (WD 177, the one with the Ork biker on the front) so it'll be more like 15!

Now you've started something.....

The last article on Dark Future in White Dwarf that i can find is the Second Part of a feature called Dead Man's Curve. You were spot on with the year, it's in WD125 which is May 1990. It's worth looking back through old issues just so you can have a laugh at some of the Mullets in the pictures. Especially on page 3.........

WD125 also has the first ever Advanced Heroquest quest that i ever played......man i feel old.

Lucky guess on the date :D *tries to remember whether he has that issue* I think I might, I'm fairly sure I managed to pick up back to the early 100s, maybe around the 100-teens. I've got an issue as old as me, though, from July 1984. Now that's kinda worrying for age :D

*sigh* if only I had space for my WD collection in the flat, instead of it living back at my family home :\ I do think I remember the article, though. Or at least some of the other articles they did about Dark Future. Didn't they introduce bikes or pedestrians or something through WD? And I know they featured in a Games Day and that hard-back Citadel Minatures book that they made in the late 80s (I can't remember its title, but I've got a copy!)

1984....you young whipper snapper. :D

I'd need one from 1971 to have it match my age, i don't think White Dwarf was going then was it.

The Dark Future article was about running a DF campaign set in the town of Dead Man's Curve, it was Part 2. It looked like RPG rules or something similar.

Did you get the screen-saver because i saw WD125 on it just this morning. :D

Yeah, I got the screensaver - seeing some of the middling WDs is kinda strange. I see them, think what was in them and think "that was quite a while ago now, especially in GW terms"! Then I see other ones that I recognise because I've collected them.

As for 1971, I don't think it was around back then. 1984 was either the 80s or the 60s and was monthly by that point, I think. Even if they were bi-monthly not long before that, it still wouldn't get to 1971. That plus GW celebrated its 25th fairly recently, so it wouldn't get back to 1971 then either :D

Except that White Dwarf wasn't always GW exclusive so it's age isn't tied to GW's, but I concur, it probably wasn't around in '71.

We're getting off-topic here, but WD is not quite as old as GW. WD was set up as GW's magazine in 1977 (according to Wikipedia) and GWs 30th Anniversary was in 2005, so they were set up in 1975. Either way, GW or WD weren't around in '71.
