What armies would you like?

Postby IBBoard at 29 Jan 2006, 16:49

Just a random thought that keeps coming back to me (because I'm too poor to afford it all :D and because of White Dwarf's Mordheim campaign). Assuming you either had lots of money to burn, had won the lottery, had the same kind of discount as GW Staffers have or were otherwise willing to buy large amounts of GW products, what you would you get?

I started with High Elves in WH, but since taking up Orks in 40K I've much preferred the Orks. I'll shortly be finishing up the 2000pt army (I'll buy the last boxes from Oracle Store with that lovely 20% discount ;) ) but the army can still go further.

If I ever had the time to move back into Warhammer as well, I'd probably start an Orc army. I've got the High Elves and it'd be a shame to waste them, and the small contingents of Empire and Dwarves, but I think the Orc style appeals too much :D Even if ya lose, it don't matter cos da boyz had dem a good punch up!

I always loved Mordheim as well, and started with a small Skaven gang. It'd be great to expand/replace and repaint that and have all of the scenery and stuff to go with it for really impressive battles!

Bloodbowl always appealed too. Not sure which race I'd go for in that, though :D

If only days and weeks were longer and someone was willing to pay me £50K+ per year to sit and do some occasional consultancy work from home :D

So, what armies would you like for what games? :)

If i were going to play WHFB then it would be a close call between Chaos and an Undead army. There's something about hoardes of undead shambling forward that seems real cool. Guess i watch to many zombie films... :D

For WH40K i would like to collect Chaos Space Marines, make them really twisted by the power of the warp. Orks are cool too but i'm not sure i could cope with all that painting.

I don't think they make it any more but WH40K Epic always appealed to me. Imagine a full Tyranid swarm coming across the table at you.

Battlefleet Gothic looked like it might be fun as well. Cor too many games i want to play.

Exactly the reason I started this topic - I wanted to see whether anyone else wanted to play lots of games :D

They still make WH40K Epic, it's just a Specialist Game now. That means you can download the rules for free, with ammendments and updates, but models are MO only ;)

BFG kinda appealed, but less than some of the other games. As for Epic - I always thought that was too small to bother painting :D

The amount of Orks in an army doesn't bother me - I enjoy my painting :) Spent about 3 hours this afternoon and managed to do the following to 6 boyz: clean up black undercoat, basecoat flesh, basecoat trousers and shirts, ink wash flesh, ink wash trousers and shirts, re-basecoat flesh (I heavy drybrush, ink and heavy drybrush again). I probably take longer than a good chunk of gamers, and I'm not as skilled as the really top painters at gaming nights, but they still look well done :)

Oh, and I just remembered another game I used to like that it'd be cool to have a character in - Warhammer Quest :D Not sure who I liked most, although I enjoyed painting my Dwarf Slayer :)

Oh, and Necromunda! Can't forget that. Got to be Redemptionists for all out crazyness.

Oh, and Inquisitor. Not quite sure what characters I'd want for that :) Probably include a Redemptionist in there too!

Damnit, too many games and not enough time or money!

Now, time to go and compare prices one last time and then possibly order those Orks!

Hmmm your probably right about the Epic figures being to small to paint but what a sight they make on a gaming table with good terrain. Did you see that WD article on that guy from Poland that painted the whole Blood Angels Chapter in Epic models, now thats what you call devotion. :D

Heading 'Off Topic' for a moment but i'm definitely a modeler first and a painter second. It takes me ages to paint something, but i love conversion work and making the models. Got any tips on how to paint quickly and up to your standard.

*Just incase i'll go check the other forums incase you've already made a thread on it*

Yeah, things like that are crazy - I wonder whether he was a staffer with discount? I don't think he was though

I'm more of a painter, then a gamer, then a modeller. I like conversions, but I can't see too many big conversions, and I always worry about the expense and wasting the models (hence why I'm converting the Warboss that my grandma gave me that she picked up cheap :D I've already got one warboss, so converting this cheap/free one is ok :) )

I'll have to see what I can do about quick painting tips - it'll be an article or a post in the painting forum :)

Well it looks like i'll be going with Space Marines, question is do i stick with the Dark Angels as i already have a couple of squads of them painted or do i go with making myself a new Chapter up. :?:

DA's have a cool background but a very boring colour scheme, but i'm looking at Forge World as i speak and they have some cool DA accessories that i would love to get my paws on. And that MKIV dread is the coolest.

Are the rules for weapons like the dreads autocannons or plasma cannon in the new rules book or do you need to buy this Imperial Armour book they mention. :?:

Ah yes, the good old Venerable dreadie :)

Forgeworld stuff tends to have its rules in the Imperial Armour book. Plasma Cannons and Autocannnons have rules in Codex:Space Marines, but not for Dreadnoughts that I've seen. I'd have to try and check with TGSC, though, because he has our copy of the codex. Alternatively, go into your local GW, pick it off the shelf and skim through ;)

Some of the Forgeworld stuff would be rather nice in an army - shame about how expensive it is :D

Now this is MAD.....

How the hell do you kill a thing like that i wonder. :?:

I like the way they say that orders over £250 are P+P free....how generous.

Holy watchamicallits! I knew Forgeworld made some big things, never seen a Hierophant in 40K scale or seen it painted though :) Some things like that would be great to own in an army, I might have to see what they have for Orks... Killing it won't normally be too much of a problem though - pointswise it'll be huge, so you'd feature it as a special unit against a full 2000pt+ army. Get a full army of lascannons, missile launchers and tank weaponry firing at it and it should hopefully go down before it eats everything :D I always remember them being rather huge in Epic, though!

Over £250 and free postage sounds like GW  much like they advertise "starter packs" on their website which are nothing but two things in one. No discount like you'd normally get, just something like Warhammer for £40 and a £15 paint set selling for £55. Thanks goodness for discount online stores ;)

*checks out Orks*

A fighter bomber would be cool for display purposes, and a Squiggoth would be great for Dawn of War style stompage :D Still, £55 and £65 respectively (or £200 if I went for Gargantuan!) is a little excessive! Especially when I've decided I can't justify £55 on a new hard disk for my fiancee's now about-dead iPod.

Oh no.....more choice.

The Imperial Guard models look interesting and the IG forge world models look very good indeed. Have you seen these guys, the Elysian Drop Troops.

http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/acatalog/co ... ROOPS.html

Very cool models but £30 for just 10 models is way to expesive for my taste, guess you could always convert some Cadians but i doubt they'd look as cool. :?

I'm sure there'll be someone out there who's still willing to make an army of them! Elysians do look quite cool, but I think I'd go for a 'standard' non-planet specific army (just in general Cadian style fatigues)

The large number of models is the one thing that puts me off an IG army, how do you get that many figures and vehicles to the game safely. :?:
I've seen the carry cases in WD but it always looks like as soon as you'd shut that lid all the aerials on the tanks would go SNAP.....

And at £30 a pop it'd cost you an arm and a leg just for a small Elysian army......maybe i'll have a go at the lottery today because (to quote the Cat on Red Dwarf)....you never know.

Vehicles are the worst. GW has its new tank cases and the larger cases, or me and TGSC use Figures in Comfort. They have lots of different sized trays, and they do tank trays and minature trays, so you can combine them to make a good case to hold all of your stuff :)

Hi, I just found your website today and this question about Armies you would like got me thinking about how I got into 40K just under 2 years ago.

I have been a historical gamer for over 20 years ( I suppose that makes me an 'ancient' wargamer) and played Traveller and some 1st Edition Warhammer (until they 'improved' it ) and just wanted some fun games.

I chose Space Marines because (A)-I only have limited money and SMs are expensive in points, (B) because a local trader had some 2nd hand (even cheaper) and (C) I am a SciFi fan and they are recognizably SF.

Unfortunately, having accumulated a reasonable sized SM force, I have now gone mad and started on Cadian Imperial Guard! This is mainly because I was Regular Army and can 'relate' to them.

The main aggravation that I have with GW is that their stuff is so expensive and, with their recent price rises to blisters, this will probably encourage me to go to ebay even more
