How Space Marines fit in their armour

Postby IBBoard at 11 Jun 2008, 12:19

I've not read it in detail yet, but I've tripped over an interesting set of diagrams about Space Marines, showing their comparative size and how they might fit in to their armour. It is always something that's a bit awkward, because even if you do take in to account the fact that they're a lot taller and broader, there is still generally something in the mechanics of it that never quite worked in what I could imagine.

The marine power armour is alot larger than the power armour of the sisters of battle or various inquisitors because without the armour a space marine is on average about 8 foot tall and obviously a lot broader, games workshop have never really went in depth to describe how marines don their armour but i have seen a pic of a team of servitors plugging the torso carapace into the black carapace in one of the index astartes books.

Now tangent over i hope that some how clears things up a bit.

I suspect it's still the same core technology, though. It's just that the Sisters won't have the same genetic engineering and other enhancements.

I think I know the picture you mean and it is a bit of a shame that they've not gone in to it more.

Well, that's GW's current line. They have, however, awarded a chapter competition prize to a female chapter. Not even just some small local thing either, it was (IIRC) a nationwide thing!

i suppose that its only believed that females cant be marines because the primarchs were all clones of the emperor, and the marines legions were created using the same genetic make up of the primarchs
so the original marines were all male but since the last foundings it possible for a female chapter

No, GW explicitly state (or at least used to state) that Marines were male because various parts of the organ implanting and hormone processes that are required to make an Initiate into a full-blown Marine are incompatible with the female physiology. Despite the fact that it's probably scientifically possible, I doubt it's very politically correct!

And White Dwarf, and several other places I think :) As far as I know it's quite old canon, possibly 2nd or even 1st Edition, where as the WD article I've seen and Index Astartes were 3rd Edition or later.

I actually found out the real reason why females cant become space marines its because the zygotes are keyed specifically to male hormones and tissue.

Ah, okay. I knew it was something along those lines, I just didn't remember quite what the detail was other than "only suitable for male physiology".
