ADF files are Army Definition Files for the Rollcall army creation application. They're simple text files that contain sufficient formatted data for the army creation application to use and are not full codexes/army books. Wordpad, Notepad, Textpad and any other similar text editor should open them fine, but you'll need the Rollcall Manual to understand them.

We host a number of ADF files but not the army books as full copies of the army books breach copyright and make us and the downloader liable to legal action by Games Workshop.

Moving to Main Games.

Unlike Lonewolf's Army Builder then Rollcall is completely free. Its successor, which I'm working on at the moment, will also be completely free and will also be open source, so anyone with the knowledge and inclination can add functionality to the application.

There have been other versions, but the latest version that I modified and maintained is available two clicks from the manual I linked to as the Rollcall v6.1 download in our Rollcall download category.

It has been a while since I used Rollcall, but IIRC you shouldn't need to open ADF files directly. What you should be able to do is run Rollcall, tell it where the MagicItems.txt file is and tell it where the ADF files are. Once you've done that then you should be able to create a new army and that will read the data from the ADF file and let you create a new army.

If you just want to read the data (which isn't all that much since GW Legal made us trim it down to an absolute bare minimum) then you can open them in Notepad or similar. Then you just need to know how to read the INI format data (which is explained in the manual).

ADF files are no replacement for an army book if you're looking for information, but they're perfect for creating armies from when you know the rule details and want something to create and calculate the army with.
